The Darkest Hour by Maya Banks
Series: KGI #1
Genres: Military Romance, Romantic Suspense
It’s been one year since ex-Navy SEAL Ethan Kelly last saw his wife Rachel alive. Overwhelmed by grief and guilt over his failures as a husband, Ethan shuts himself off from everything and everyone.
His brothers have tried to bring Ethan into the KGI fold, tried to break through the barriers he’s built around himself, but Ethan refuses to respond… until he receives anonymous information claiming Rachel is alive.
To save her, Ethan will have to dodge bullets, cross a jungle, and risk falling captive to a deadly drug cartel that threatens his own demise. And even if he succeeds, he’ll have to force Rachel to recover memories she can’t and doesn’t want to relive—the minute by minute terror of her darkest hour—for their love, and their lives, may depend on it.
Ethan and Rachel are not my favorite couple, of this series I admit. This is this book where we meet KGI and the Kelly family for the first time. Rachel is thought to be dead at the beginning of this book. While Ethan is suffering though not only grief at losing his wife but guilt of things that happened before she left for her trip.
His brothers run KGI, an organization that contracts with the government occasionally but also handles hostage retrieval among other things. They attempt to get Ethan to join them but he is too deep in his own grief and guilt. Then he receives a package that tells him Rachel is alive and needs recusing.
Nothing could have brought him into KGI quicker. I think Ethan is the biggest reason they aren’t my favorite couple. He tries too hard at times and then at others seems to let Rachel flounder a bit. I get his guilt from what happened before plays a huge role in how he treats her. Maybe if he had been up front and honest but the with her going through so much it’s hard to say.
I will admit there are moments when I wanted to slap Rachel as well. Although I understand where’s she coming from. She spent a year in captivity and that has left its mark. She’s clearly close with Garrett, Ethan’s brother, and has memories of him. While she’s fuzzy on most of the other people, including Ethan at times.
One thing I love though is how remembers things the Kelly brothers taught her when it counts the most. When she’s ready to fall apart or scared witless she remembers what to do and makes a plan. An ingenious plan if I do say so myself.

Suspense & romance combined, sounds like my idea of a good book. You’ve got me wanting to see if Rachel’s memories fully return & how she & Ethan can work through their past. Thank you for your review.
