Genres: Mystery, Thriller
BLISS IS BACK... AND THIS TIME HE'S TWICE THE THREAT.
Jimmy Bliss’s first unsolved case is proving to be a puzzle. Despite an original investigation and subsequent case reviews, the police still do not have a suspect in the 1999 murder of a local authority worker. The only lead Bliss and his three new colleagues have is the recent unearthing of the murder weapon. But when that takes them no further, they realise their only chance of success is to find fresh evidence missed in the original case.
The reinvestigation is starting to look hopeless when in steps a shadowy figure from Jimmy’s past. The man has a favour to ask, and Bliss a debt to repay. With his loyalty put to the test, can he be convinced the request is genuinely for the greater good?
Meanwhile, the violent executions of two young drug runners are the first lethal blows in a war between organised county lines drug gangs. Bliss is asked to act as the Senior Investigating Officer. Working with his Major Crime Unit colleagues, he professes to align himself with one of the gangs to ensure a peaceful end to hostilities. But will they call his bluff and see his act for what it is?
Bliss’s strategy prompts an unexpected reaction in one psychopathic loose cannon, resulting in threats of violence and the spread of fear. And when those threats become actions, will Jimmy and his colleagues be caught in the line of fire…?

Review
DI Jimmy Bliss is back and while I haven’t met him before now I was thrilled at the introduction. He is the head (in a civilian capacity) of the Unsolved Murders Team which is like the Cold Case Squads we have here in the States. To add to that he is also the SIO (Senior Investigating Officer) for the Major Crimes Unit. I didn’t know you could be both even if you are a civilian. It’s a thriller though so we will let that slide.
Both of these leave him very busy but all the good ones always are. He works the cases with determination and I will say that I found him just as determined as Jimmy Perez from Ann Cleeves’ Shetland series. That is high praise from me because he is one of my all time favorite detectives. Working two cases could be a problem but DI Bliss handles them well and if something were to happen to me I want him on the case.
I loved his team and the way despite his retirement to them he is still in charge and always will be. It just shows their loyalty and the fact that they work well together. Like a fine oil machine. Their banter made them that more likable.
All in all this is a great read. There are plenty of twists and turns that will leave you guessing and on the edge of your seat as you wait to find out just what happened.

Thank you so much for a cracking review. And just to set your mind at rest, here in the UK the police are bringing back retired detectives to do a wide range of jobs, which include the two roles I have Jimmy on here. Thrilled you enjoyed it.
