Red Bones by Ann Cleeves
Series: Shetland Island #3
Genres: Mystery, Scottish
An island shrouded in mist and a community with secrets buried in the past . . .
When a young archaeologist studying on a site at Whalsay discovers a set of human remains, the island settlers are intrigued. Is it an ancient find - or a more contemporary mystery?
Then an elderly woman is shot in a tragic accident in the middle of the night. Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called in by her grandson - his own colleague, Sandy Wilson.
The sparse landscape and the emptiness of the sea have bred a fierce and secretive people. Mima Wilson was a recluse. She had her land, her pride and her family. As Jimmy looks to the islanders for answers, he finds instead two feuding families whose envy, greed and bitterness have lasted generations.
Surrounded by people he doesn't know and in unfamiliar territory, Jimmy finds himself out of his depth. Then there's another death and, as the spring weather shrouds the island in claustrophobic mists, Jimmy must dig up old secrets to stop a new killer from striking again . . .
Review
Even though this is the third book in the series it is the first that I read. I watched the television show and that led me to the books. Since this was the first episode I wanted to read it so badly. That led me to begin the series out of order. Honestly I don’t think I missed much of anything by reading this one first.
Shetland detective Jimmy Perez is called away from Lerwick out to Whalsay to investigate the death of Sandy’s grandmother. Sandy is Jimmy’s detective sergeant and the person who found his grandmother, Mima. It appears as though there has been a horrible accident and Mima was shot.
At the beginning of the book Sandy seems young and a bit naïve by the end he has grown so much as a character. We quickly learn that Mima’s death is anything but an accident and when a second murder occurs Jimmy is racing to find the killer.
This book was one of the best mystery thrillers I have ever read. Even though I had seen the show, I was still drawn into the plot and taken on a ride that left me surprised by the killer. Yes, I knew who it was but getting to that point was so much better in the book.
