I love the library, I always have but let me tell you we haven’t always had the best relationship that is for sure. First I used to hate that there was s limit on the number of books I could get. Growing up I could read ten books in a day. So anytime I went I would have my parents and siblings get books for me on their cards as well.
I also had a hard time returning books when I was younger. I wanted to read them again and again which I couldn’t do if I returned them. Not to mention the librarian didn’t always want to let me check out the books i wanted to as she deemed them inappropriate for my age.
I remember one Saturday when I had my stack of books reading to go when she told me I couldn’t check any of them out. I had a couple of young adult books and The Grapes of Wrath. I was in the third grade at the time and so excited because I was moving up to the older books. The young adult books didn’t really keep me interested anymore and I had discovered a list of recommended reads for the high school kids.
She said that book was far to mature for a little girl my age and suggest some easy readers. I guess she figured if I couldn’t reach the counter I couldn’t manage those books. I went and got my father who was patiently waiting for me while reading the newspaper. I explained that I couldn’t check out my books. He went to the counter and asked if there was a problem. She explained that the books I had were far to advanced for me and I needed to stick with books for my age group.
My father laughed and told her books for my age group stop being fun for me when I was two. There was no point in making me check out books that I would never read. I was beginning to read at a high school level and if she didn’t want to let me have the books he would be checking them out from that moment on. He ended up checking them out that day and she didn’t remain at our library long. I’m not sure what happened to her but she made an impression on my young self when she tried to stop me from reading.

Wow…that’s kinda sad that a librarian would tell a child NOT to read. Do you think your father complained? Glad you’re still reading!

I can relate! it’s like from the story of the book called “the Little Prince” where in adults would hinder us from exploring the world but in your part, you were hindered of being free on putting knowledge to your self.
